Featured Tournament: Oklahoma Riichi Open

Register | ARA | WRC

OKM is putting Oklahoma back on the map again with an open tourney! The chapter is hoping to spice up the tourney scene in the states with not only being one of the few Aka nashi options for tournaments, but also with some additional mods that include open riichi, which has never been done at any ARA ratified tournaments.

OKM believes that since its Aka nashi, not only does open riichi allow more tools to use to build the value needed in those tough situations where you just need a little more scoring but it also opens an entirely new strategy of being able to deal into a hand on purpose to shut down another players hand. We hope this will become a mainstay at future Oklahoma opens and would love to hear feedback on what players think of it.

Frequently asked Questions:

What’s the process for calling Open Riichi?

Discard the tile turned to the side like you would normally declare Riichi, verbally declare “Open Riichi”, sort your hand if not sorted already not including the tile you just drew (ascending or descending order from left to right with suits separated), then reveal the hand, integrate the tile you just drew, and place your Riichi stick.

Is there a penalty for dealing into an Open Riichi whether forced or not?

No, there is no penalty for dealing into an Open Riichi. The person who deals in just pays out the hands full value.

Do I have to declare my wait for Open Riichi?

No and if someone asks you are not required to answer with your wait.

What do I do if I feel like someone is colluding by dealing in to an Open Riichi?

Call a judge over and let them know. Explain the situation. The judge will assess the situation and issue a ruling, either warning, penalty, or disqualification. Time will be added onto the tables match to make up for the time they lost.

If you find the decision is unjust, you may challenge the judge by calling for the head judge who will have a final say on the decision

Can you make calls and still win Nagashi Mangan?

No, the player must have made no calls and have none of their tiles called to count for Nagashi Mangan

Does Nagashi Mangan count as a win or noten?

Nagashi Mangan will count as a win meaning you will get any Riichi sticks in the middle, any honba payout from the table, and if dealer you will repeat otherwise the dealer will rotate
